The Restorative Care Unit (RCU) at Regional West Medical Center is an 18-bed unit that provides skilled nursing care to patients in the unit. RCU patient are typically patients who do not need the intensive nursing care provided in the medical and surgical units of the hospital, but still require inpatient nursing or medical care or rehabilitation services.
RCU patients are encouraged to eat in the unit dining room and participate in activities made available such as crafts, baking, card and board games and pet therapy. Patients may also attend daily chapel or the hospital chaplain will make personal visits upon request. It may be more comfortable for the patient to wear sweats or other comfortable clothing rather than a hospital gown during their RCU stay. A typical RCU stay may last as few as one week or as many as six weeks.
A social worker will meet with every patient and their family to ensure that the social and emotional needs of the patient are met. They will also answer questions regarding financial assistance and referrals to other services as needed. Physical, occupational, speech and respiratory therapy are available when ordered by the patient's physician. A dietitian will meet to consult with each patient and actively involve the patient in their plan of care.
